Ein Maulaffe ist ein Gaffer. Es ist "einer, der mit offenem Maul dasteht und gafft".
Das Wort wird seit dem 15. Jahrhundert benutzt und geht zurück auf Halter aus Ton, die die Form eines Kopfes haben und in deren "Maul" brennende Kienspäne gesteckt worden. Die Halter klemmt man sich zwischen die Zähne und kann nun im Dunkeln arbeiten, hat beide Hände frei und Licht.
Tja... im Mittelalter gabs noch keinen Duracell Hasen und keine Taschenlampen ;-)

The word has been used since the 15th century and originates from holders made of clay that are shaped like a head, into whose "mouth" burning splinters were inserted. The holder is clamped between the teeth, allowing one to work in the dark with both hands free and light.
