Bier als Grundnahrungsmittel (auch "flüssiges Brot") definierte sich als Dünnbier über den Umstand, dass wenn man schon mal Bier damit brauen konnte, die Wasserqualität wohl ausreichend war, bzw. der Alkohol im Bier Krankheitserreger abgetötet hätte.
mit Hopfen und Malz (und Wasser in Mitteleuropa hinreichend verfügbar) war die Befriedigung der Grundbedürfnisse der Menschen also schon mal gesichert.

Beer, as a staple food (also referred to as "liquid bread"), was defined as thin beer by the fact that if one could brew beer with it, the water quality was likely sufficient, or that the alcohol in the beer would have killed pathogens.
With hops and malt (and water sufficiently available in Central Europe), the basic needs of people were thus already secured.
