Im Mittelalter und auch zu Beginn der Neuzeit waren viele Menschen extrem abergläubisch. So glaubte man, dass man mit lautstarken Glückwünsche böse Geister auf sein Gegenüber lenken konnte. Um das zu vermeiden hat man bei Glückwünschen drei mal auf den Boden gespuckt. Spucken galt dann irgendwann als unfein. So hat man dann nur noch so getan als ob man spuckt. Dabei kam eben toi, toi, toi raus. Heute benutzen es manche Menschen noch, um anderen Glück zu wünschen. Manche Menschen verstehen unter toi, toi, toi (Oder hier eher Teu, Teu, Teu) die Abkürzung für Teufel, Teufel, Teufel. Das kommt daher, weil man früher geglaubt hat, das Teufel einem nichts tun kann, wenn man seinen Namen kennt und oft sagt.

Some people understand it (or rather here, Teu, Teu, Teu) as an abbreviation for "Devil, Devil, Devil." This belief stems from the idea that the devil cannot harm you if you know and frequently say his name.
